Whale Watching on the East Cape of Los Cabos: When to Go and How We Book It

Humpback whales pass the East Cape from December into April, with the best odds from January through March, and we book 2.5-hour guided boat trips from Cabo Pulmo or San José del Cabo.

The season. Humpbacks arrive in the warm water off Los Cabos in December to mate and give birth, and most local operators put the peak between January and March. By mid-April they're heading north again. If whales are the reason for your trip, come in February.

How we do it. Our concierge books a guided whale watching boat trip of about two and a half hours. Boats leave from Cabo Pulmo or San José del Cabo, daily or on demand, and the trip includes the boat, a guide and refreshments. Prices change with the operator and the size of your group, so we quote them when you ask: concierge@nestbaja.com, or +52 1 624 141 8729 on WhatsApp. Bring a light jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen. It's cooler on the water than on our deck.

From here. The Sea of Cortez is right in front of us, and in season it's worth keeping an eye on the water from your terrace in the morning. Pair a boat day with a snorkel at Cabo Pulmo, home to the largest coral reef in the Gulf of California, and you've covered the two reasons most people come to this coast in winter.
